I just browsed a little for the Macbook pros you speak of - haven't found any deals technologically superior to the Mini (yet) but will keep looking. Not sure what I'll rely on the most since there are so many programs to choose from, few of which I've used, and all of which I'm guessing have different strengths, so I may be using a variety depending on the project. If I go with the Mac I'm definitely giving Logic a try. I'm going with 8 minimum just to be safe. Last note: the PC-to-Mac learning curve is not a factor to me. These are the issues causing me to buy a new computer in the first place.

My musician friends prefer Macs to PCs, so I want to try one out. I thought of buying a used 2012 model for the potential RAM upgrade, but am extremely skeptical of used computers, especially when used for this purpose. Long version (so you understand my thought process): I have researched this for a while but cannot find a straightforward answer anywhere online. I will not even connect it to the internet whenever I can avoid it. I also want it to be able to handle some video editing, but it will be primarily used for music. Is the second-tier $700 version (2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive) good enough to use without regretting my purchase? To clarify, I want to be able to do as many music-related tasks as possible such as recording live instruments, creating electronic music with MIDI controllers, mixing, sampling, etc.
